It sounded like a threat—until it became a fact. After losing to Enzo Ferrari in 1964 at the World Championships, Shelby made this brash promise for when they would meet again in ’65.

Then he parked himself in his garage. Problem-solving day and night with four Santa Monica hot rodders, they worked to fit a massive Ford engine into a smaller, more aerodynamic chassis. The result? Shelby and his team created a car that became the most loved, feared and copied sports car in all of American auto history. Which is how, in ’65, Enzo Ferrari’s ass did come under brief ownership of a scrappy former racer from Leesburg, Texas.
