Carroll Shelby made good on the audacious promise he made in 1964. Because it was his personal mission to beat Enzo Ferrari ‘at his own game’—racing. But, first, he had to address a major design dilemma:  stuffing that massive Cobra engine into a small chassis. Shelby, overseeing four Santa Monica hot rodders, tore the cars apart and rebuilt them from the ground up to withstand the unique strain and demands. Through innovation and perseverance, Shelby and his team of craftsmen succeeded in creating a car that became all at once the most loved, feared and copied sports car in American auto history. The following year, in 1965, Ferrari’s ass did, indeed, belong to Shelby at the World Championships. So did racing history.
